Sorry guys, but hope the girls can help with this one.

Anybody else had their periods stop on the old MTX? Been taking it since November and now up to 15mg. Think the last one was about 3 months ago and no I'm not pregnant, unless we're going for a re-run of the immaculate conception or Dave's tubes have joined back together again and I was asleep, its not possible. I'm only 45, so for goodness sake don't say its the menopause already, I'll have a tantrum if it is!

Are you on steroids?

they can stop on steroids- mine decided to go all over the place on steroid!

MTX can affect fertility but normally on the higher doses.

No problems with MTX Sara and I have been up to 25mg. Was only on oral steroids for a short time but things did go a bit haywire then.

Hi Sara
I've been on various treatments over the last 5 years, and my periods stopped about 4 years ago! I am now 49 years old! I never did worry about the cause as I was glad to see the back of them!! ThumpUp So far they haven't re-started and I haven't had any menopause problems... I think all the other things cause me more than enough problems to keep up with! (Guillain Barre and RA). My GP reckons its the menopause.
So I guess it could be either.

Hi all,
No steroids as yet just diclofenac, paracetamol and omeprazole. On the last leaflet I got with the MTX it does give irregular periods as an uncommon side effect but not on any other information, why are all these leaflets different! Depends on the manufacturer I suppose, so that's another one for the list. Doesn't bother me, because yes would be glad to see the back of them in a way but it would just be nice to know what's going on. These cocktails make it difficult to analyse.

Aha, I knew there would somebody out there! Right so this begs the question about the menopause then. As I understand it we are born with a certain number of eggs which determines when your periods end and hence the onslaught of the menopause, which I don't fancy really having seen the affect of several friends! So Ceri, do we avoid the menopause and all it can bring? Yes, there must be a silver lining! Have you been taking the gnat's pee as well?

Hi Sara

Yes! I'm 34 and been on MTX for about two years now and have only had a few periods in the last 18 months, and these don't seem to follow any pattern.

I recently mentioned this to a friend who is a Pharmacologist who did some reading on the subject. Apparently because MTX dosage in RA is relatively low there is no concrete evidence that it can have an effect on menstruation, although many people have reported their periods stopping when on MTX. However, MTX dosage in cancer treatment (which is a much higher dose) can cause periods to stop. She was unable to find any research that has been done on low dose MTX and early menopause/periods stopping.

Doesn't really answer your question, but you're not alone.

Take care
Sara x
